Registered Nurse / Human Resources Occupational Health & Safety Coordinator (Permanent, Full-Time $73,000 to $92,000)

As a cornerstone member of the Human Resources team, the Occupational Health and Safety Coordinator will function in both a hands-on tactical capacity and in an organizational level strategic capacity, providing service and support as the Hospitalís lead in all matters related to occupational health and safety and abilities management. The Occupational Health and Safety Coordinator will be responsible for promoting and maintaining a safety culture in order to actively improve workplace safety in addition to providing comprehensive occupational health services to employees while taking a lead role in attendance management and wellness promotion. Accordingly, the incumbent will be responsible for the following:

  • Plan, develop and execute occupational safety programs, policies and procedures to ensure compliance, while optimizing the safety of our workforce
  • Provide ongoing guidance, expertise and support as it relates to all operational and continuous improvement matters involving health and safety
  • Ensure organizational compliance with all Occupational Health & Safety related legislation including: Employment Standards Act, Occupational Health & Safety Act, Labour Relations Act, etc.
  • Provides significant support and guidance to the Hospitalís JHSC
  • Monitor employee illness and absence with appropriate interventions to expedite recovery and return to work, manage both WSIB and short-term disability claims
  • Provide OHS support to the Attendance Assistance and Healthy Workplace programs
  • Establish and maintain employee health records
  • Coordinate safe return to work plans for employees who have a need for accommodation or other placement
  • Assess functional abilities in conjunction with a treating healthcare practitioner, employee, manager and human resources
  • Review and respond to incident and hazard investigations and to identified contraventions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA)
  • Collaborate with leaders, external partners, external agencies, service providers and contractor agencies to ensure the implementation, compliance and maintenance of safety strategies, programs, policies and procedures
  • Work with the Ministry of Labour (MOL) in the investigation of incidents and help to facilitate the organizational response to any orders or directives
  • Provides applicable training education and oversees online health and safety training program
  • Other related duties, tasks and projects as required


  • Current certificate of competence as a Registered Nurse (RN) from the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Minimum of one year ofexperience in Occupational Health and Safety
  • Advanced computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Knowledge of legislative requirements and commitment to remaining abreast of changes
  • Post-secondary degree in Nursing
  • Previous experience in a health care environment preferred
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) preferred
  • Certificate in Occupational Health Nursing or equivalent preferred
  • Experience in the development, implementation and evaluation of best practice in OH&S preferred
  • Educational preparation/courses in Leadership or Management an asset
